1. Florencia Castoldi:

2. Maria Lilian S. Espedill:

On the eve of the Feast of Mary's birth, more than a hundred thousand peoples gathered in St. Peter's Square led by Pope Francis to pray for peace. The silence, prayers, songs, reflections and readings expressed this deep desire for peace not only in Syria but also for the whole world, especially for peace in each one's heart. It was very moving experience to be there amongst thousands of peoples in solidarity with a nation who is suffering.

After having lived an intensive experience of accompanying our tertians undergoing the one month Spiritual Exercises, I felt a revitalization in enthusiasm and zeal in my own personal call to follow Jesus and to collaborate in his desire to build the Kingdom of God—in the here and now building of a more fraternal, just, peaceful and humane world. Hence, the Pope’s convocation for a day of prayer and fasting for peace to all Christians as well as to peoples of other creeds, and to men and women of good will had found a deep resonance within me and among all of us. And so led by our Superior General Beatriz Acosta, the community of the Generalate along with the group of Third Probation heeded the call to solidarity.

One of the striking points in Pope Francis’ message was the following and I quote directly because it is very compelling and an urgent challenge to all of us—

“At this point I ask myself: Is it possible to change direction? Can we get out of this spiral of sorrow and death? Can we learn once again to walk and live in the ways of peace? Invoking the help of God, under the maternal gaze of the Salus Populi Romani, Queen of Peace, I say: Yes, it is possible for everyone! From every corner of the world tonight, I would like to hear us cry out: Yes, it is possible for everyone! Or even better, I would like for each one of us, from the least to the greatest, including those called to govern nations, to respond: Yes, we want it! My Christian faith urges me to look to the Cross. How I wish that all men and women of good will would look to the Cross if only for a moment! There, we can see God’s reply: violence is not answered with violence; death is not answered with the language of death. In the silence of the Cross, the uproar of weapons ceases and the language of reconciliation, forgiveness, dialogue, and peace is spoken.”

I felt that these words present very powerfully and clearly what it implies to be a follower of Jesus in today’s world. How will I live this out in the daily life? In my community? In the carrying out of my apostolic tasks? In my way of living as a woman religious? More than the burden of this challenge, I felt a surge hope and enthusiasm which I read as God’s grace working in me.

I thanked the Lord for this gift of being part of a historic event in the life of the Universal Church. At one point in the prayer vigil, I prayed for the Egyptian nation and our sisters who live and work in Cairo, making present in that gathering as well their sufferings and difficulties. And I knew that everyone gathered there prayed fervently for the leaders of nations so that they may be filled with wisdom that will enable them to look for more peaceful and dialogical means in resolving the situation in Syria and eschew whatever interventions that may lead to violence and more aggression.

At the end of the prayer vigil, I felt that I have just gone through a very clear religious experience – of being part of the Body of Christ. And that was not only mine, but a graced gift that the people gathered there have received as well.

3. Micheline Aluma Mutimavisaa:
